Health Protocols
Students, faculty and staff who are feeling ill, or want to take preventative measures against illness like the flu or COVID, can find resources below.
Influenza (Flu)
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses and can cause mild to severe illness. Members of Niner Nation can help reduce the spread of the flu by getting a yearly vaccine and staying away from others when you are sick.
COVID-19
COVID-19 is a disease that often causes respiratory symptoms that can feel like the flu or a cold. Other symptoms may appear. If you believe you may have COVID-19, please get tested. Students should consider an evaluation by their healthcare provider or call the Student Health Center at 704-687-7400 for advice regarding testing and care. Employees should contact their healthcare provider.
Please note:
- The University no longer provides designated isolation space for students if they are ill. They are encouraged to return home if they are able. Otherwise, they may rest and recover in their residence hall room. They are also encouraged to follow all recommended CDC precautions when around others.
- The University no longer provides documentation to students for returning to class following an absence for COVID. Students should work directly with their professors if they must be absent for short periods of time for illness. As always, in the event of extended absences, the Office of Student Assistance and Support Services can provide absence verification for students.

- Employees: Employees who feel ill should contact their healthcare provider.
If you will miss work or class due to illness, you should:
- Notify your faculty members and supervisors of your illness and your need to remain home. You should not attend class or report to on-campus work assignments if you are sick.
If you are an on-campus student who is ill and you need to obtain food, you should:
- Order food directly using the delivery robots or fill out the sick meal form, which allows students to identify a friend or neighbor to pick up a meal on their behalf. If a student does not have a friend or neighbor available to pick up their meal, they will be directed to contact Auxiliary Services, which will arrange delivery to the student’s residence hall. Note: A meal plan is required for the sick meal form option.
